Storage & Floor Remodel Ideas for Your Bathroom
At Professional Installed Floors, we’re always talking with our Atlanta clients about how they can improve their home, so it’s probably no surprise that bathrooms come up quite often. We even dabble in bathroom remodels a bit ourselves (more on that below). Through it all, we’ve learned that no matter the size or shape, it’s possible to have a relaxing and beautiful bathroom. Here are three trends we recommend considering for any bathroom remodel regarding both aesthetics and functionality.
Remodel Trend #1: Optimize Small Spaces
Many bathrooms simply don’t have that much space. Fortunately, it’s easy to get more out of your bathroom’s square footage by simply re-thinking how you can use the space. Two of your biggest friends in this battle are mirrors and cabinets — and those sometimes come as one piece. From a visual perspective, mirrors give the illusion of space. They also come in unique shapes and sizes, so they can complement whatever aesthetic you’re going for.
Mirrors provide the appearance of space, but they’re not going to add much functionality to your small bathroom. That’s where cabinets can do wonders. Most bathrooms have considerable wall space that can be used for strategic cabinet placement; this will help you get the most out of your vertical space and include extra storage — if they have mirrors, all the better. Similarly, depending on the type of sink you have, it may make sense to add a ledge to store small items that you use regularly. Also, if you’ve got unused space underneath your sink, wicker baskets look great and can be used to store a variety of items.
Remodel Trend #2: Heated Tiling
On a winter morning, even the prettiest bathroom can be uninviting with bare feet on cold tile. Fortunately, technology has a way of letting us pamper ourselves with modern bathrooms. One of the trends of the past decade is to install heated tiles in the bathroom. While this may seem like a fancy configuration, the truth is that it’s actually quite simple — the tiles are simply installed over a specialized heating pad designed just for circumstances like this. The heating pads are wired into an accessible control panel, and then the tiles are installed on top of it.
Of course, it’s not just ceramic or porcelain tiles that can be used for heated flooring (they do radiate heat very well, though). Stone flooring such as granite or travertine is a natural conductor of heat, as well as stunning to look at. It’s important to note that engineered laminate flooring isn’t the best choice for this as it can’t be used with a radiant heat source.
Remodel Trend #3: Three-Dimensional Wall Tiling
What do you have on your bathroom walls? For most people, they’re probably just painted walls with a bit of decoration. However, a different kind of tiling might just do the trick to spruce up your bathroom. 3D wall tiling is one of the latest trends and these tiles are relatively easy to install. The name says it all — rather than a flat 2D wall, a 3D tile adds texture with a patterned surface and shape that is placed in a repeatable tile across some or all of a wall. They can be used to add both color and style to your bathrooms, and the range of aesthetics means that they can go with any vibe you want to create: modern, traditional, retro, etc.
